DMS - DHS Band Bridge

The Band Bridge is a publication intended to help build a bridge and bond between the DHS Marching Band students and those middle school students involved in music at DMS. The DHS Marching Band’s long history of excellence is only possible with the yearly pilgrimage of students from DMS over to DHS. Studies have shown that music education is important to developing smarter kids and that skills learned through the discipline of music transfer to study skills, communication skills, and cognitive skills useful in all academic subjects. Over the last 25 years at DHS, more than 85% of the senior class valedictorians, salutatorians, and star students were band students.

Dalton Daily Citizen News - Letter to the Editor

DHS band still makes great music

To the editor:
"And now entering the field for competition/exhibition please welcome the Dalton High School Catamount Marching Band"! Those words still send chills up my spine. During my days of DHS Band membership, we were huge, loud, and intimidating. I remember tons of other high school band members coming to watch our Thursday night practices at Harmon Field. The band was at least 230 members strong. Under the leaderships of Mr. Darry Pilkington and Melvin Morgan the band grew not only in number, but also in popularity. A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to have breakfast with "Mr. P" and Mr. Morgan at Jacksonville State University. This was due to the annual JSU Southerners Alumni Day. These words I remember from that conversation: "David Henry (Band Director and DHS/JSU alumni) is the best thing that happened to Dalton High in years". You see, Melvin Morgan had judged Mr. Henry’s DHS band a few weeks back during an out-of-town competition. He stated that this particular band had a sound quality much like to bands of yester-year. Yes, the band is small – but growing – but more importantly, the QUALITY of these musicians matches any year yet! I have followed the DHS band from 1968 until present. David Henry is an accomplished musician and teacher. I’ve performed with him at Dalton and Jacksonville; plus other ensembles during college. Please support this excellent group any way you can; and encourage your children to become a member of this "band" of musician’s (brotherhood) that will forever change their lives.

In Memory of Chester L Henry

Mr. Chester L. Henry, 78, passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech and spent many years in church work in Dalton. Chester is survived by his children, David, Mark and Mary Beth; and two grandchildren. Memorial services will be held in the chapel at First Baptist Church of Dalton on Saturday at 11 am. Visitation is at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Chester’s name to the Ga. Tech Baptist Student Union. Words of comfort may be sent to the family at www.lovefuneralhomega.com

Henry remembered as 'teacher of teachers'

By Charles Oliver (Dalton Daily Citizen)

Chester Henry “was an exceptional Bible teacher,” says Sarah Lusk. Lusk was a Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist Church of Dalton when Henry, who passed away last Saturday at the age of 78, came there as minister of education and administration in the mid-1960s. Lusk described Henry as “an encourager.” “He would see the potential in people and encourage them to reach that potential and help them in any way he could, especially in religious education,” she said. As minister of education, Henry brought in seminarians to help train the church’s adult teachers and took the church’s teachers to numerous training events. “He was very much a teacher of teachers himself. On Wednesday night, he would gather all of the adult teachers and teach the following Sunday’s Sunday school lesson, giving them points to make and background Bible study,” Lusk recalled. Henry is survived by his children — David, Mark and Mary Beth — and two grandchildren. Henry was born and raised in Owensboro, Ky., according to his son Mark. “Dad was very smart, a very good mathematician. He grew up in a very rural area, but he had a teacher who took an interest in him and steered him to the co-op program at Georgia Tech,” he said. That program allowed students to go to school for one quarter and then work in industry for a quarter to help pay for their education. Henry was very active with the Baptist Student Union at Tech, and some time before he finished his studies, he felt the call to the ministry, Mark Henry said. He finished his industrial engineering degree and went into the seminary. Henry served in churches in Florida and Tennessee before coming to Dalton. He remained in Dalton until moving to the Atlanta area in the mid-1970s. Henry was also very active in the Dalton High School Band club, serving as its president. “The band was very large. But he kept us organized. He kept us supplied with everything we needed. Everything was on time and ready and top quality,” recalled Lisa Hackney, a member of the band in the mid-1970s. Henry’s son David currently serves as the director of the Dalton High band. In fact, Mark Henry says he and all of his siblings are musicians. He says his father wasn’t a musician, but he saw how important the band was to his children and wanted to get involved. “He was a huge supporter of the band and everything that his family was involved in. He was on practically every trip we went on. He was always right there and interested in what we were doing,” recalled family friend and former band member Mel Abernathy.

DALTON ARTS PROJECT SPONSORS INSTRUMENT DRIVE

Dalton Arts Project is collecting used band instruments to help support local music programs at the middle school level.  Often students wishing to play in the band cannot participate due to the cost of the instruments.  The donation of an instrument will provide a student an introduction into the world of music as well and an opportunity to play in the band.

DAP is initiating this instrument drive with the support of Dalton Middle School and the Catamount Band Club to provide deserving students with instruments.  Donated instruments will be cleaned and if necessary, minor repairs will be made before checking them out to the students for the school year.

Please drop off any instruments at the Dalton Arts Project office or at Dance Theatre of Dalton at 111-A Glenwood Avenue. A tax-deductible receipt is available for all donations.  If you have any questions or wish to help with this new program, please contact Devon Brooks at 706.277.6254. For more information about the Dalton Arts Project, please visit www.daltonartsproject.org.

Here are the guidelines: (1) All the information has to be turned in by August 10th. The information you need to give is your band information: your name, how many years in the band, what do you play, what special awards you have received. (2) The cost is $100 for a half page and $150 for full page. You may also get sponsors. (3) The picture can only be a professionally made photo. If you want to use this year's band picture that is being made on August 16th, that is fine, but the payment and information has to be received by the 10th. If you want to use a different picture it has to be hand delivered, sent as a jpeg, or on a CD. (4) Make checks payable to: Marketing Alliance. (5) Mailing address: Mike Shaw, PO Box 0128, Dalton GA 30722, e-mail: mike.shaw@mktalliance.com, phone: 706-277-9707 ext 286.
