AJC: Memories of ‘65 - Dalton High bandmates recall role in inaugural parade

The following article ran in the Sunday Jan 11th edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.....

COBB COUNTY: ‘It’s something you remember all your life’

Memories of ‘65: Dalton High bandmates recall role in inaugural parade,

give advice to South Cobb High, which gets its turn to march Jan 20.

On Jan. 20, 1965, in 38-degree snowy weather, the Dalton High School Catamount band paraded four miles along Pennsylvania Avenue for President Lyndon B. Johnson’s inauguration, which drew a record 1.5 million people. Four members of that band know what’s ahead for members of the South Cobb High School Blue Eagle marching band. The Cobb County band will play in President-elect Barack Obama’s inaugural parade Jan. 20, an event expected to draw 3 million to 5 million people. “They are in for a real treat,” said Cheryl Gosa of Atlanta. “I tell people about it all the time.” Gosa was 13 and played clarinet in the 1965 inaugural parade. The Dalton band included eighth-graders. One of her clearest memories is when the band passed the reviewing stand and she looked to her left to see President and Lady Bird Johnson behind a bulletproof shield. Charles Bowen of Acworth was 15, played the saxophone and shook Vice President Hubert Humphrey’s hand.  Lee Pence of Kennesaw was 13, stood 6 feet 1 1/2 inches tall and weighed 200 pounds. He had trouble finding size 13 band shoes and towered above the other flute players.  Pence said he, too, stole a glance at the president as he marched by the reviewing stand, even though band members weren’t supposed to. Paula Wilkins Driggers of Marietta —- then 14, trombone —- did not, however, see the president. “I can remember not wanting to wear my glasses for vanity reasons, and I didn’t see the president,” she said. “That’s the funny thing. After all that, I didn’t see the president.” The Dalton band marched in a uniform of red blazers, black slacks, white shirts, ties, white shoes and black bowlers. That alone drew media attention because other bands looked more traditional. The band had a white sousaphone, unique for the time, that drew national television mention by Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. “Oh, man, it was great,” Pence said. “Our band’s reputation overnight went on to acclaim.” The four musicians can’t remember what songs they played in the parade. South Cobb will play Hoagie Carmichael’s “Georgia on My Mind” and John Williams’ “Summon the Heroes,” written for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.  South Cobb has raised $145,000 plus in-kind contributions to send 95 band members to the inauguration. In 1965, the city of Dalton pulled together to raise $6,784 to send 94 band members. Band parents were asked to contribute another $18.50 for meals. “I met people from all over the country. It’s probably the first time I met anybody who lived outside Georgia,” said Pence, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who is now a financial adviser. “It’s like one big happy party.”  For Gosa, that happy party includes two distinct memories. One is walking 20 blocks to see the movie “Goldfinger.” The other is staying at the hotel with a friend who had a broken leg when the rest of the band went ice-skating. “Two 13-year-olds stayed at the hotel alone and watched ‘Hullabaloo’ on television,” said Gosa, a Presbyterian minister and media consultant who now sells real estate. “Petula Clark sang ‘Downtown,’ my favorite song.” For Bowen, it was his moment in history. “I don’t remember feeling tired. The adrenaline was flowing. It was kind of building up to the time we got to the reviewing stand, seeing all those important people and thinking what an awesome experience this is.” “Just to say you are a part of history, not a lot of people have that special experience,” said Bowen, a department chairman in Kennesaw State University’s college of education.  His advice to the South Cobb band members: “Look forward to the wonderful memories. Do all you can to preserve them. Take photographs. Keep a journal.” Each inaugural parade is a reminder. “I see them and say, ‘Hey, I did that. I’m a big deal, too.’ It’s something you remember all your life. It’s something no one can take away from them,” Pence said. Gosa, who went on to play in the University of Georgia Redcoat Band, wants the South Cobb students to have a good time, collect everything to do with the inauguration and put it away in a box like a time capsule.  Forty-four years later, her memorabilia-filled scrapbook, band letter sweater and medals prompted the four bandmates to relive history. “I knew it was special,” Bowen said of his march in history. “As you get a little bit older, you appreciate the moment even more.”

Dalton Daily Citizen News - Letter to the Editor

DHS band still makes great music

To the editor:
"And now entering the field for competition/exhibition please welcome the Dalton High School Catamount Marching Band"! Those words still send chills up my spine. During my days of DHS Band membership, we were huge, loud, and intimidating. I remember tons of other high school band members coming to watch our Thursday night practices at Harmon Field. The band was at least 230 members strong. Under the leaderships of Mr. Darry Pilkington and Melvin Morgan the band grew not only in number, but also in popularity. A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to have breakfast with "Mr. P" and Mr. Morgan at Jacksonville State University. This was due to the annual JSU Southerners Alumni Day. These words I remember from that conversation: "David Henry (Band Director and DHS/JSU alumni) is the best thing that happened to Dalton High in years". You see, Melvin Morgan had judged Mr. Henry’s DHS band a few weeks back during an out-of-town competition. He stated that this particular band had a sound quality much like to bands of yester-year. Yes, the band is small – but growing – but more importantly, the QUALITY of these musicians matches any year yet! I have followed the DHS band from 1968 until present. David Henry is an accomplished musician and teacher. I’ve performed with him at Dalton and Jacksonville; plus other ensembles during college. Please support this excellent group any way you can; and encourage your children to become a member of this "band" of musician’s (brotherhood) that will forever change their lives.

DALTON ARTS PROJECT SPONSORS INSTRUMENT DRIVE

Dalton Arts Project is collecting used band instruments to help support local music programs at the middle school level.  Often students wishing to play in the band cannot participate due to the cost of the instruments.  The donation of an instrument will provide a student an introduction into the world of music as well and an opportunity to play in the band.

DAP is initiating this instrument drive with the support of Dalton Middle School and the Catamount Band Club to provide deserving students with instruments.  Donated instruments will be cleaned and if necessary, minor repairs will be made before checking them out to the students for the school year.

Please drop off any instruments at the Dalton Arts Project office or at Dance Theatre of Dalton at 111-A Glenwood Avenue. A tax-deductible receipt is available for all donations.  If you have any questions or wish to help with this new program, please contact Devon Brooks at 706.277.6254. For more information about the Dalton Arts Project, please visit www.daltonartsproject.org.

Cheesecake / Pizza Fundraiser Delivery - Thur Oct 2nd (HELP NEEDED)

We need your help on Thursday October 2nd!  Our band students (DMS & DHS) sold 1700+ items for this year's Cheesecake / Pizza / Cookie Dough Fundraiser. All of the items will be delivered to Dalton Middle School on Oct 2 and we need help sorting them all and grouping them by each student's order form so the band students/parents can pick them up and then deliver to their customers. We will begin at 8AM and will stay until the last pickup, usually around 8PM. This is a very important fundraiser for the band program and it takes a lot of people to make it successful. If you can donate your whole day or just 1-2 hours, we would love to have you join us and we definitely need the help. No experience necessary. On the job training provided. We need to keep a list of who is planning to help and when, so please send us an email if you can help (jeffparrott@charter.net)

Marching Band Asked to Perform at City Hall - Thur Sept 18th (time change!)

Buses will depart DHS at 4pm. The Concert at City Hall is at 5pm. After the concert, the band will return to DHS to resume regular Thursday night rehearsal.

Leadership Georgia Coming to Dalton - From Thursday through Saturday, the 2008 Leadership Georgia class will visit Dalton as one of its five major program stops around the state. The theme is “Progress in Motion.” The class, consisting of nearly 120 members, will explore local industries in Dalton and examine the progress and ever-changing needs required to lead a diverse population.  The weekend of events will be led by program chairs Jorge and Julia Atiles of Athens. They are graduates of the Class of 2007 of Leadership Georgia. Together with a long list of Dalton-area Leadership Georgia alumni, they have planned the Dalton program. The entire Board of Trustees of Leadership Georgia will also meet in Dalton. Leadership Georgia is a 36-year-old organization of community leaders from all over Georgia. Participants have a proven record of community service and are selected based on personal accomplishments and potential for future leadership. Affiliated with the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the organization trains and builds a network of emerging young leaders. Together, participants seek mutual understanding of the problems of the state and their solutions. Leadership Georgia participants will arrive at City Hall at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Dalton-Whitfield Chamber of Commerce officials want people to line Waugh Street near City Hall to welcome them. They are asking that people be lined up by about 4:40 p.m.

For those that purchased tickets:

Be at DHS by 9:15am, the bus will leave at 9:30.

Return to DHS between 1:00-2:00 am Sunday morning.

Description: On Saturday July 26th, just prior to band camp, we are offering students the opportunity to attend a Drum Corps International (DCI) competition in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome. This is the DCI Southeastern Championship with 21 corps scheduled to compete in Prelims during the afternoon and then the top corps in Finals Saturday night. These are highly skilled musicians performing in energetic and exciting marching drills. As a youth activity (ages 14-22), the world of competitive Drum and Bugle Corps is an intense, choreographed musical experience staged on football stadium fields by students achieving high levels of excellence in performance. Through the drum and bugle corps experience, young people develop life skills including self-discipline, teamwork and leadership. Dalton High School is proud to have 5 students/alumni currently participating in drum corps: Patrick Geren (Bluecoats), A J Taylor (Spirit), Stephen Callaway (CorpsVets), Jonathan Cruz (CorpsVets), and Aubree Stewart (CorpsVets). This is an event you don’t want to miss!
